Further to my first post on this subject, I’ve been keeping an eye on the Active Version piechart displayed on the WordPress plugin repository page for my Dynamic Content Gallery plugin.
As expected, the figures have changed a little since I posted the first piechart on 3rd November 2010, so I thought I would post an update every few weeks – just to see how the active versions are changing over time.
As mentioned in my previous post, as a plugin author I want users to upgrade – given that I’ve spent a lot of time honing, tweaking and bug squashing, to make the plugin as best as it can be. Perhaps this may encourage some of you to upgrade?
8th February 2011 – Analysing the statistics
Update: 8th February 2011
- The overall percentage of people running version 3.3.5 (the current version) continues to increase, slowly but surely, and now represents 36%.
- Whether this increase is due to new downloads (which continue at 200 – 300 per day, or upgrades, isn’t known of course.
- As mentioned last time – strange that folks continue to use, given the IE browser bug in that version…
25th January 2011 – Analysing the statistics
No new versions of the DCG were released since I last posted here on 11th January.
- The overall percentage of people running version 3.3.5 (the current version) has again increased significantly to a whopping 35%!
- Therefore the current version, 3.3.5, is now for the first time since its release the single largest user group! Yippee!
- Still a lot of folks using 3.2.3 though… Strange, given the IE browser bug in that version. Maybe people never check their own sites as much as they should… 😉
11th January 2011 – Analysing the statistics
No new versions of the DCG were released since I last posted here on 25th December.
- The overall percentage of people running version 3.3.5 (the current version) has again increased significantly to a whopping 28%! Perhaps New Year’s resolutions included keeping WP and plugins up to date? 🙂
- However, the single largest active version remains version 3.2.3 (and well out of date it is, too) at 38%. This is only a 2% drop from the 25th December figures.
- Interestingly, users who are upgrading are predominantly those who were already running version higher than 3.2.3. So, the big question is this: why aren’t more 3.2.3 users upgrading?
25th December 2010 – Analysing the statistics
No new versions of the DCG were released since I last posted here on 15th December.
- The overall percentage of people running version 3.3.5 (the current version) has increased significantly to just under 19%.
- The single largest active version – version 3.2.3 and well out of date – has reduced now to just under 40%. This is good, but not nearly good enough.
15th December 2010 – Analysing the statistics
No new versions of the DCG were released during the last seven days, and some improvement in the active versions.
- The overall percentage of people running version 3.2.3 (which is the single largest user group) remains high but has reduced slightly to just over 40% (from 41%).
- Versions between 3.2.3 and 3.3.5 have reduced – which suggests, again, that users who update, update. in other words, they keep updating with each release – which is great.
- The above statement is borne out by the fact that 60% (or so) of installs are still running what I consider to be very out of date versions (3.2.3 and earlier). These folk should upgrade immediately…. please!
8th December 2010 – Analysing the statistics
Two new versions of the DCG were released during the last seven days – 3.3.4 and 3.3.5. Clearly, two releases so close together, and so soon after the previous release, are bound to mess up the stats a little – and they have. Although the actual percentages are not visible in the screengrab, I made a note of them and I refer to them below.
- The overall percentage of people running version 3.2.3 (which is the single largest user group) remains high at 41%, down slightly from 43% last week. This isn’t surprising given the two new releases since last week.
- Only 3.3% of installs are for the very latest (3.3.5) version. To be fair, this version was only released a couple of days ago and we should see this rise by the end of next week.
- 19.5% of installs are running versions older than 3.2.3.
- The combined 3.3.4 and 3.3.5 installs amount to 9% (5.7% plus 3.3%).
- A whopping 60% (or so) of installs are running what I consider to be very out of date versions (3.2.3 and earlier). You guys! Yes, you! You know who you are. Upgrade!
1st December 2010 – Analysing the statistics
A new version of the Dynamic Content Gallery (version 3.3.3) was released on 7th November.
- Two weeks after the release of version 3.3.3, only 17.4% of active installs are running the new version. Some of these will be brand new installs, of course, but I suspect a fair number will be upgrades. (See 25 November 2010 Snapshot image.)
- Three weeks after the release of version 3.3.3, the proportion of active installs running the new version has increased to 19.2%. Again, there will be some brand new installs here but, hopefully, a fair number of people have upgraded. (See 1 December 2010 Snapshot image.)
- The overall percentage of people running version 3.2.3 (which is the single largest user group) remains roughly fixed at 43% (or so).
Based on the above, I draw a rough (very rough) conclusion that users who update tend to update reasonably quickly when a new version is released. That leaves the version 3.2.3 users as my target…
